How did you use Evernote and the Evernote Web Clipper to support your work in this course?
I used Evernote for all of my class and reading notes in this course. It was a convenient way to keep all of my notes from this course in one place and a much more efficient way to take notes since typing is much faster for me than writing. I used Web Clipper in order to clip and copy all articles that we read in class and any that I found related to the class, which also helped with keeping everything in one place.
What other uses for your PKB did you develop as you got more comfortable with Evernote?
I did not use Evernote for much more than class notes, reading notes, and keeping a log of the articles for this course. While I do think it is a helpful tool and a really great idea, I found it to be a lot more work to try to keep up. One of the main problems that I had with it was that I rarely have my computer with me, and thus it’s much easier for me to take notes on paper, or highlight sections of a book and make notes in the margin. I even bought a tablet for this course simply for the purpose of trying to use Evernote on the go! But even that was tricky because I had to make sure I could connect to the internet, and that it was charged, etc. Although I never actually searched for anything within my Evernote, I can see down the road where it could be helpful to search for keywords, but I rarely had the need for it in this course; and even when I did, I found myself resorting back to simply looking at the highlighted sections in my books. Perhaps with more time, or maybe taking more than one course, I could get into using Evernote, but I didn’t find it that helpful this month.
Describe your PKB's organizational scheme. How many notebooks have your created? What (if any) tags are your using? What uses (if any) have you discovered for note links?
I created two notebooks: URI-SU13 and EDC503. (I staked EDC503 within URI-SU13.) I did try to tag as many keywords as I could on the topics in each note. For example, any note that had to do with my Adopt-a-Book I tagged as “Adopt-a-Book”, “Inequality for All”, and “Reading”, along with anything else that was relevant. All of my class notes were tagged “Class Notes” and then anything else they were related to. On my class notes, I did find it useful to be able to include note links to the articles, so whenever we discussed an article in class, I would Web Clip the article and then provide a note link next to the notes I took about the article on my “Class Notes” note.
Describe at least one metacognitive protocol that YOU develop to augment your current thinking. This could be a study strategy that you have adapted, a way to organize your research, or so other way of organizing your new knowledge for writing, planning, etc. The also be strategy that you think would be useful for you (or others) for some future purpose.
This summer I am starting a few tutoring jobs, and I think that using Evernote could be useful for that purpose. I recently observed my mom’s tutoring session (since I will be tutoring my first Algebra I student next week), and before the session began, she was flustered because she didn’t know what she had assigned them the week before and what they had covered. All of the assignments she has given them (and that I have given to my students) are in PDF form, so I think it would be useful to create a notebook for each one of the students I will be tutoring and include within each notebook the homeworks that I assign to them each week. That way, it will be easy for me to pull up each assignment; I can scan my answer sheets to Evernote; and I can include notes after each session so I know what needs to be covered next time. The other thing I realized in making these notebooks was that I created tags for the topic of each assignment. That way when I do start teaching, I will already have a resource of some sample tests and quizzes for Algebra I, etc.
